    IRDAI Directives to Curb Unsolicited Commercial Communication

    • The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has issued directives to regulate the use of Unsolicited Commercial Communication. The directives are based on instructions from the Telecom Regulatory and Development Authority (TRAI).
    • The directives aim to ensure that consumers are protected from unwanted messages.
    • TRAI has implemented regulations and guidelines to curb Unsolicited Commercial Communication in a co-regulatory manner with support from all Telecom Service Providers.
    • The regulations mandate registration of all commercial promoters and telemarketers to register on DLT platform and seek customer consent for receiving various kinds of promotional messages at time and day of their choice.
    • Only whitelisted URLs/Apks/OTT Links/Call back numbers are allowed in the content template, and messages containing other than whitelisted URLs/Apks/OTT Links/Call back numbers shall be ceased from further transmission.
    • All variables used within message content templates need to be pre-tagged, indicating their intended purpose.
    • Digital consent is to be acquired from consumers in coordination with the service providers for efficiency and security.
    • All Access providers are required to form Digital Consent Acquisition facility for unified customer consent. No other consent mechanisms will be accepted to streamline confirmation.
