Moga: September 13, 2023 – PNB MetLife, one of India’s leading life insurers, distributed financial literacy booklets to disadvantaged girls in secondary school in Moga, Punjab through its partnership with Project Nanhi Kali.
Nanhi Kali is one of India's largest programmes providing underprivileged girls with access to quality education and support to complete their schooling. Daily academic support includes access to a personalised EdTech learning platform, a professionally designed sports curriculum, and an annual school supplies kit containing essentials such as a school bag, stationery, pullover, raincoat, and feminine hygiene material, enabling girls to attend school with dignity.
Recognizing that financial literacy is key to empowering women and giving them a greater role in their families and communities, PNB MetLife created the financial literacy booklet to teach basic financial concepts to young girls. In FY23, 24,579 booklets were distributed across six locations - Mumbai, Barabanki, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Ratlam, and Shravasti. This year, PNB MetLife will be distributing 20,427 more booklets to girls in Amritsar and Moga in Punjab, and Palghar, Ambegaon, Chakan, and Nashik in Maharashtra.
Cindy Tang, Regional Head of Communications at MetLife Asia, distributed the booklets with the PNB MetLife team in Moga. “MetLife is honored to support the Nanhi Kali program, so that girls can reach their full potential and create a positive impact on the lives of their families and communities. We believe financial knowledge will enable them to face the future with confidence and fulfil their dreams.”
“To become financially independent, empowered women, it is important for young girls to learn about money-management at an early age. We are grateful to PNB MetLife for spearheading this initiative and creating this customised financial literacy module for Nanhi Kali. This has enabled tens of thousands of underprivileged girls to learn financial concepts with understanding, through an engaging comic book format. We would also like to thank PNB MetLife for their continued support towards the education of 834 girls in Moga and Varanasi through Project Nanhi Kali,” said Sheetal Mehta, Executive Director & Trustee, K.C. Mahindra Education Trust.
About Project Nanhi Kali
Project Nanhi Kali was started in 1996 with the objective of providing quality education to underprivileged girls in India. Jointly managed by K.C. Mahindra Education Trust and Naandi Foundation, the project has transformed the lives of over 550,000 girls across 15 states.
With the aim of helping girls complete schooling, the Project provides them with comprehensive support including daily afterschool academic support through centres which operate within government school premises. An annual school supplies kit comprising of a school bag, stationery, pullover, raincoat, and feminine hygiene material is given to every girl, enabling her to attend school with dignity. Project Nanhi Kali also provides girls with access to a personalized, adaptive learning software pre-loaded on digital tablets. This AI powered software matches instructions to the learning level of each girl, enabling her to learn with understanding and thereby, improve herlearning outcomes. Further, a professionally designed sports curriculum has been integrated into the intervention to promote holistic development.
The project’s on-ground operations are managed by an all-woman team Community Associates, who are recruited from local communities and trained to become learning facilitators and mentors to the girls. They also engage with parents and community stakeholders to create conducive, girl-friendly ecosystems.
Aligned with the UN SDGs 4 and 5 of Quality Education and Gender Equality, Project Nanhi Kali ensures that every girl is given the opportunity to learn and achieve her full potential. For more information visit: https://www.nanhikali.org/
